General Dental Terminology Explained

GENERAL DENTISTRY:  A General Dentist refers to the primary care provider for patients in all age groups who take responsibility for the diagnosis, treatment, management of overall services to meet patients oral health needs. These oral health care needs include fillings, crowns, veneers, bridges, root canals, tooth removal, root canals and gum care.
CROWNS:  A dental crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” that is placed over a tooth. Crowns restore a tooth’s shape and size, strength, and/or improve its appearance when a tooth has become compromised by fracture due to trauma or decay.  Dental crowns encase the entire visible portion of a tooth – from top of tooth to the gum line.
BRIDGES: A dental bridge, also known as a fixed partial denture, is a restoration used to replace a missing tooth by joining permanently to adjacent teeth or dental implants. Types of bridges may vary, depending upon how they are fabricated and the way they anchor to the adjacent teeth. Conventionally, bridges are made of porcelain or porcelain fused to metal.
COSMETIC FILLINGS:  Composite resin dental fillings were created as an alternative to traditional metal dental fillings. Tooth fillings colored to look like a natural tooth are known as Composite Resin Dental Fillings, are made of a plastic dental resin. Composite Resin Dental Fillings are strong, durable, and make for a very natural looking smile. Many dental insurance plans cover their use.
“Sm:)e Perfected WHITENING SYSTEM: The Smile Perfected™ whitening system will help you achieve a noticeably whiter, brighter smile in just 20 minutes with no sensitivity. Patients can achieve a professional whitening in less time than traditional, often painful methods of the past. Our office incorporates bleaching “trays” which the patient takes home and uses a concentrated gel inside of custom made trays. The trays are made from an impression of each patients teeth. This method is cost effective for the patient because they pay for the trays once and then only have to buy the bleach gel as needed, the trays can be kept for years.
VENEERS:  There’s no reason to put up with gaps in your teeth or with teeth that are stained, badly shaped or crooked. Today a veneer placed on top of your teeth can correct nature’s mistake or the results of an injury and help you have a beautiful smile.  Veneers are thin, custom-made shells crafted of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front side of teeth. You should know that this is usually an irreversible process, because it’s necessary to remove a very small amount of enamel from your teeth to accommodate the shell.
DENTURES: Complete Dentures replace all the teeth, while a partial denture fills in the spaces created by missing teeth and prevents other teeth from changing position. If you’ve lost all of your natural teeth, whether from periodontal disease, tooth decay or injury, complete dentures can replace your missing teeth and your smile. Replacing missing teeth will benefit your appearance and your health. Without support from the denture, facial muscles sag, making a person look older. You’ll be able to eat and speak-things that people often take for granted until their natural teeth are lost. There are various types of complete dentures. A conventional full denture is made and placed in the patient’s mouth after the remaining teeth are removed and tissues have healed which may take several months. An immediate complete denture is inserted as soon as the remaining teeth are removed. The dentist takes measurements and makes models of the patient’s jaws during a preliminary visit. With immediate dentures, the denture wearer does not have to be without teeth during the healing period. Even if you wear full dentures, you still must take good care of your mouth. Brush your gums, tongue and palate every morning with a soft-bristled brush before you insert your dentures to stimulate circulation in your tissues and help remove plaque.
RESTORATIVE DENTISTRY: Restorative dentistry replaces these damaged or missing teeth with dental restorations, which appear smooth and natural.  When complete, your dental appearance is a healthy one, and even more importantly, your overall oral health is at an optimal functioning level. More and more, evidence suggests that there is a strong correlation between oral health and overall health.
DENTAL IMPLANTS: A dental implant is a device that is placed directly into the upper or lower jaw bone in the area of a missing tooth, usually made of titanium, used to support restorations that resemble a tooth or group of teeth to replace missing teeth. Dental Implants have become the most prominent and popular means to replace a missing tooth or teeth. The main advantage of them is that once the bone fuses to the implant (about 6 weeks) you will a strong durable foundation to place the cap on that will last a lifetime.
INVISALIGN®:   Invisalign® straightens your teeth using a custom-made series of aligners created for you and only you. These aligner trays are made of smooth, comfortable and virtually invisible plastic that you wear over your teeth. They gradually and gently shift your teeth into place. There are no metal brackets to attach and no wires to tighten. You just pop in a new set of aligners approximately every two weeks, until your treatment is complete. You’ll achieve a great smile with little interference to your daily life. Learn More
FACIAL REJUVENATION:  Our office can also accommodate your facial cosmetic concerns (ie. Wrinkles) With Botox and Juvederm® wrinkle therapy…we can smooth out these imperfections caused by aging and stress with a few painless injections. The soft tissues around the mouth are as important as the color and position of the patient’s teeth in determining the patient’s smile. (Source: American Academy of Facial Esthetics. www.facialesthetics.org)  At Desenze Dentistry, we are now offering our patients individualized skin treatment options including botox injections, dermal fillers, and other facial rejuvenation treatments as a complement to our traditional cosmetic dental procedures such as porcelain veneers and composite resins.
